“APOSITION Music Forum”
St. Petersburg, October 7th, 2005

The International APosition Music Forum is an annual festival gathering musicians from different countries working in new areas of free jazz, electroacoustic, experimental, free improvising and ethnic music.

Forum is organized by the APosition Creative Union with the support and help from cultural organizations, like CEC Artslink, Goethe Institute, cultural departments of the foreign diplomatic representatives in Russian Federation.

The long time partner of the APosition Music Forum has been the Moscow’s Long Arms Festival, which occurs on the same dates, so most of the projects have a possibility to perform in Moscow as well as in St. Petersburg.

APosition Music Forum consists of 2–3 days of concerts at one of the city big concert halls, a series of “gigs” at local clubs, master classes and a conference dedicated to music, culture and philosophy.

Goals and objectives:

to present Russian audience with achievements in modern deep music from all over the world

to promote development of infrastructure of non pop-music projects in Saint-Petersburg like experimental, non-commercial oriented music and related art forms

to provide an opportunity for Russian and foreign musicians to learn from each other, share and create music together, discuss common concerns, ideas and projects

Fall of 2005 saw the First International APosition Music Forum at the Glinka State Capella that included performances by Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, David Moss, Shelley Hirsch, Mark Stewart, Charles Gayle, Evelina Petrova and Mandelbrot.

APOZITSIA 2005 line up:

• Terry Riley -- California Composer and pianist, Terry Riley launched what is now known as the Minimalist movement with his revolutionary classic IN C in 1964. This seminal work provided a new concept in musical form based on interlocking repetitive patterns. Its impact was to change the course of 20th Century music and it's influence has been heard in the works of prominent composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Adams and in the music of Rock Groups such as The Who, The Soft Machine, Tangerine Dream, Curved Air and many others.

• Pauline Oliveros – accordionist and avant-garde composer, Pauline Oliveros pioneered the concept of Deep Listening, an aesthetic based upon principles of improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation.

• Evilina Petrova – accordionist, composer, star of new Russian music

• David Moss -- Based in Berlin, American David Moss is considered one of the most innovative singers and percussionists in contemporary music. His solo performances combine drums, metal, strings, plastic, wood, and electronics, with provocative and extreme vocals.

• Mark Stewart -- Multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and instrument designer Mark Stewart has been heard around the world performing old and new music. A founding member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Mark is also a member of Steve Reich and Musicians, David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness, the manic duo Polygraph Lounge with keyboard & theremin wizard Rob Schwimmer, The Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Arnold Dreyblatt's Orchestra of Excited Strings and Zeena Parkins' Gangster Band.

• Shelley Hirsch – Unorthodox, extraordinary fusion of composer, vocalist and performance artist. One of the brightest voices of the New York downtown scene. Her work encompasses story telling pieces, staged performances, compositions, improvisations, collaborations, installations, and radioplays, which have been presented on 5 continents.

• Charles Gayle – cult New York free jazz saxophonist. While primarily known for his fiery sax work, in recent years he has returned to his first instrument, the piano. He has also experimented with the bass clarinet, the viola and drums on several of his albums. He has recorded and played with some of the best musicians in jazz: William Parker, Cecil Taylor, Rashied Ali, Sunny Murray, Henry Grimes and John Tchicai; and has been associated with alternative rockers Henry Rollins and Thurston Moore.

• Mandelbrot – New St. Petersburg project of extreme –experimental music

• Didier Lasserre/Sebastien Capazza –improvisational duet from France

• Christian Brazier – Sharp and active new jazz musicians and composer
