organizers
and partners:
The Forum is organized by the Creative Union Apositsia and the
international cultural organization, CEC ArtsLink with financial
support from the Trust for Mutual Understanding (New York) and
the Goethe Institute (Russia).
The Forum is also grateful for the support of Apositsia’s regular
partners, the Center for the Development and Support of New Music,
Devotsia Moderna, and the Cultural Center DOM (Moscow)
history:
The creation of a forum of new music in St. Petersburg was a reaction
to the untimely death of Nikolai Dmitriev, the leading proponent
of alternative music in Russia and founder of the DOM Cultural
Center. The Long Arms Festival, created in his memory, took place
for the first time in May 2004 at the DOM Cultural Center in Moscow.
In October 2005, the Creative Union Apositsia and CEC ArtsLink
in collaboration with the Long Arms Festival in Moscow, invited
leading musicians from the United States, France, and Russia
to perform in a series of concerts at the Cappella Theater in
St. Petersburg and the DOM Cultural Center in Moscow. Among the
participants were: the minimalist pioneer Terry Riley, the international
acclaimed avant-garde accordionist Pauline Oliveros, the free
jazz saxophonist Charles Gayle, and the virtuoso accordionist
Evelina Petrova.
This event received wide press coverage. Television journalists
from “Channel 5,“ “NTV, “Rossiya” and “Kultura” filmed the concerts
and interview the musicians. Reviews of the concerts appeared in
“The St. Petersburg Times,” “Kommersant,” “Petersburg Chas-Pik,”
“Sankt Peterburgskie Vedemosti,” and other publications.
